Frequently Asked Questions
Preparations
How should I prepare for my session?
Prepare your outfit in advance. Ideally, change into your outfit just before the session to avoid opportunities for spills and stains. It is a good idea to bring a change of clothes as a backup.
Hair and makeup should be done prior to the session. I recommend using subtlety with cosmetics, as skin is easier to retouch than extensive makeup - remember, many of your photographs may be close-up; excepting stylized shoots, wear what you would wear for any appropriately-formal occasion. You may wish to bring along supplies to maintain or touch-up hair or makeup during the session, as is necessary. Facial hair should be freshly-groomed or clean-shaven.
What should I wear for my session?
Your photo shoot is all about capturing who you are. What you wear can be a reflection of your style, your passions, and your personality, and I want that to come through with the images you receive. I can, however, provide some tips and best-practices:
Head shots
The best outfits will have solid colors; patterns can distract, and particularly small patterns may create visual artifacts in your completed image. Select a color or colors that complement your skin tone - you know yourself best! You may wish to bring a jacket, or other accessory like a tie. Be mindful of jewelry, as it may also distract from your final result.
Portraits
For individuals, as weather permits dress in layers to enable more variety in photographs and sometimes make for great impromptu prop(s). When selecting an outfit, be sure to choose colors with contrast and generally choose simple patterns or solid colors in attire. Neutral colors work as a terrific base, but bright and bold colors can make for striking results. Pay attention, also, to the season and weather when choosing your fit and palette.
For couples and families, it’s best to choose contrasting colors with neutral or muted tones. Colors that are close-but-not-quite create tension, and bright colors can focus attention on just one member of the group. Whatever you choose, make it relatively consistent in formality and color in order to give the most cohesive result.
Logistics
Will you travel beyond your advertised radius?
Yes! Travel by personal vehicle beyond the base distances quoted in my packages is charged at $0.50 per additional round-trip mile. Travel requiring flights and/or overnight accommodations may be possible and will be arranged on a case-by-case basis with clients.
How do you protect my investment?
The primary equipment I use for all commercial sessions carries redundant storage media to protect against failure. I maintain local copies of all photographs in addition to copies stored in the cloud-based client galleries. For guarantees and liability, please refer to the Jared Miles Photography contract.
How long will my online gallery be available to me?
I guarantee availability of clients’ online galleries for thirty days beyond the posting date. I may honor requests for extension of this up-front on a case-by-case basis, and reserve the right to remove galleries from their online store front at any time beyond this date. Clients who wish to retrieve images after their galleries are removed may be assessed a retrieval fee.
What is the difference between “web” or “social” and “high-resolution” images?
Web- (a.k.a. “social-media-”) sized images are suitable for digital use online in contexts like Facebook or LinkedIn, or for local storage on your PC. These are not, however, suitable for printing. These images have the benefit of consuming less space on your devices, and being quicker and easier to download and share. Prints of these images will appear soft and “pixelated” for anything larger than 3”x5”.
High-resolution images are suitable for printing even in larger formats and wall art. A selection of high-resolution files is available as part of each photographic package for download and use at the clients’ leisure.
All photographs supplied as part of a web-sized client gallery may be purchased as physical products based off of their high-resolution source images. Additional high-resolution files may be purchased a la carte.
